Jefferson County is Alabama's most populous county, with a population of more than 660,000, representing 15% of the state's total population. It is the principal center of finance, trade, manufacturing, transportation, health care and education in the state. Shelby County is the fastest growing county in the state. The county offers diverse amenities in a temperate climate with dramatic landscapes. Blount County was named for Tennessee Governor W. G. Blount who sent militia under Andrew Jackson to defend the settlers in Alabama during the Creek War of 1813-1814. Some of Jackson's men were first settlers. The county today is mostly known for its covered bridges. Blount County demographics
