There are homes in downtown, historic urban neighborhoods, and the suburbs. City dwelling means residing in one of Birmingham’s historic 99 neighborhood subdivisions, each with its own neighborhood association that falls under the city’s nine city council districts.. In the suburbs, residents have a variety of residences to choose from including estate lots, town homes, apartments and sprawling mansions.

Whatever the preference, Birmingham is a wonderfully diverse city whose metropolitan area features something for everyone. Although it is one of the 60 largest metropolitan areas in the country, Birmingham has not grown too large to enjoy. A recent survey by the accounting firm, Ernst & Young, ranked Birmingham as the eighth most affordable housing market among 70 metropolitan areas. U.S. News & World Report ranked Birmingham as one of the top 25 cities where homeowners fare best, and last year, the city of Birmingham was designated as one of “America’s Most Livable Cities.”

Good apartments can be found in almost any part of the metro area. The choice of style is as varied as the rental price and size. Homes for Sale

Current Housing Statistics from the University of Alabama Real Estate Research and Education Center show an 11.3% increase in home sales for 2005 compared to the same period one year ago. A record total of 16,745 homes were closed compared to 15,048 in 2004. The average selling price was $193,271 in 2005, compared to $180,433 a year ago, or a 7.1% increase. The median price for 2005 was $159,682, compared to $149,000 a year ago.
