Princeton Baptist Medical Center has been helping shape the picture of medicine in Birmingham since 1922. It was then when Baptist laymen set their sights on providing quality healthcare in a Christian environment. A renowned medical residency program serves as a training ground for physicians of tomorrow. Centers of treatment include cardiology, oncology, orthopedics, surgery obstetrics and gynecology, neuroscience and psychiatry and are supported by intensive care units, a special care nursery and research. The hospital is fully equipped with outstanding support services such as emergency services, physical and speech therapy, pharmacy, laboratory and complete radiological services.
Birmingham VA Medical Center

Birmingham VA Medical Center provides primary, secondary and tertiary care to veterans of Alabama and surrounding states. Tertiary care referrals are received from throughout Alabama from the near 30,000 veterans served annually on either an inpatient or outpatient basis. The medical center has 135 operating beds, including 32 beds for blind rehabilitation. Some specialized services include open-heart surgery, a cochlear implant program and radiation therapy.

Brookwood Medical Center is a center for excellence for such major specialties as cardiovascular medicine and surgery, cancer, neurology and neurosurgery, psychiatric services and emergency services. The Brookwood Women's Medical Center, adjacent to Brookwood Medical Center, is a premier provider of women's healthcare in Birmingham, including obstetrical and gynecological services, as well as medical and surgical services. The Center's labor and delivery unit features labor, delivery, recover suites and practices one-to-one nursing care during labor - a patient-care technique that places a registered nurse in the patient room to ensure quality of care. In addition, the Center provides a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that is staffed 24 hours a day. Other notable services include The Heart Attack Intervention Center, The Asthma Center of Excellence and The Brookwood Diagnostic Center.

The Children's Hospital, is the only free-standing pediatric hospital in the state with 2000 full-time employees and 554 physicians serving over 11,421 inpatients and 420,847 outpatients annually. This 225 bed hospital is a key component of Children's Health System, a network of primary care physicians, pediatric subspecialists, CACH HMO-a pediatric managed care plan, After Hours Care and a new outpatient surgery and specialty care center. Specialty care is available for adolescent medicine, allergy, endocrinology, gastroenterology and nutrition, hematology/oncology, neurology, neurosurgery, pulmonology, urology, ENT, general surgery, orthopedics, and sports medicine. Other services include a nationally recognized Burn Center, Center for Cystic Fibrosis, a Critical Care Transport Team, a Research Center, a licensed school for patients and the Early Intervention Center.
Cooper Green

Cooper Green Hospital is an acute care teaching facility located on the south side of Birmingham providing service to Jefferson County residents who otherwise would not be able to afford healthcare. In 1998, the Balm of Gilead Center was opened to provide care for terminally ill patients with a goal of assisting them to die peacefully. This unit provides quality palliative care for the patient and family.

The Eye Foundation Hospital at UAB is one of the few facilities in the world that dedicates itself to advancements in ophthalmology. Since the hospital's opening in 1963, more than 85,000 surgical procedures have been performed in its state-of-the-art surgery suites. As the only eye specialty hospital in Alabama, The Eye Foundation is in constant demand not only for its 24 Hour Eye Emergency Center, but also for its advanced retinal procedures, corneal transplants, cataract extractions with intracular lens implants, laser vision correction and diagnostic technology. The Eye Foundation houses The Optical Shoppe, The Lion's Eye Clinic, The UAB Ophthalmology Services and a professional office building by private practices.

Healthsouth Lakeshore Rehabilitation Hospital is a freestanding rehabilitation facility. The hospital provides acute and modified rehabilitation, transitions program consisting of day treatment and residential services and outpatient therapy. Areas of major patient care include: Arthritis, brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, oncology, orthopedics, cardiology, pulmonary, post-polio, pain management, fibromyalgia and multiple sclerosis. Special features are family education, support group resources, sports/recreation, and aquatic therapy.

Medical West has for more than 34 years provided primary and secondary care. It has become the healthcare facility of choice for most western Jefferson, northern Bibb and east Tuscaloosa County residents. Medical services range from a 24-hour-a-day emergency department to a diagnostic, cardiac catheterization laboratory to a same day surgery program to a mobile magnetic resonance imaging unit to an all private-room women's center. The hospital has many primary care clinics, including one in Vance, Alabama, home to Mercedes Benz U.S. International.
Norwood Clinic

Norwood Clinic is the largest private multi-specialty group practice in Alabama and one of the largest in the U.S. The clinic has an impressive level of available medical technology. On-site support services for Norwood Clinic's physicians and the almost 2000 patients seen daily include a Radiology Department which offers magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) and a fully computerized clinical and anatomical reference laboratory. St. Vincent's Birmingham

St. Vincent's Hospital, the system's flagship, is a fully accredited facility with a 100-year tradition of patient-centered care. St. Vincent's is a member of the Daughters of Charity National Health System. By combining services into coordinated programs, St. Vincent's often takes a multidisciplinary approach to treating patients. For example, patients anticipating hip or knee replacement receive everything from pre-surgery education and physical therapy to post-operative exercise and follow-up care through the Total Joint Program. The new Comprehensive Breast Center takes a multidisciplinary approach to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Services range from education and treatment to support groups and follow-up care. Two radiologists independently read all mammograms for increased accuracy. Other notable areas at St. Vincent's include the Women's and Children's Center, cardiology, neuroscience and oncology services in the Bruno Cancer Center. UAB (University of Alabama Medical Center)

In 1945, the University of Alabama School of Medicine moved from Tuscaloosa to Birmingham, where two major hospitals were located within a single block. Today, UAB's campus comprises 75 city blocks, and the university is known worldwide for its outstanding research and patient care and its innovative educational programs. UAB Hospital provides health care services from general/acute to tertiary care for some 43,000 patients annually. The Kirklin Clinic at UAB is an innovative outpatient facility housing 35 adult medical specialty and primary care clinics with 450,000 patient visits annually. In the 1998 rankings by U.S. News & World Report, five specialties at the UAB Hospital were ranked among the best in the nation. These specialty areas are cardiology and cardiac surgery (21st), geriatrics (39th), gynecology (40th), pulmonary disease (37th) and rheumatology (fifth). In October 1997, the National Research Corporation named UAB Hospital one of America's most preferred hospitals. The award recognizes the 120 most-preferred hospitals in the nation according to a national survey of patients about their overall health care needs.

Shelby Baptist Medical Center serves the residents of Shelby County. The hospital has a medical staff of 130 physicians.
